AIDS
1. AIDS
(Acquired Immune-Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease, which is caused by a virus
called Human Immune Deficiency Virus or HIV. The virus is fatal and dangerous
because it destroys the immune system in the human body & remains in the
body for years together without any visible symptoms. AIDS is the last stage of
infection of the virus. In the US
and some other countries like Uganda ,
Zimbabwe etc, AIDS emerged in the 1980s. In India , the first case of HIV
infection was detected in 1986 in Madras .
According to the estimates by Indian Health Organisation There were lacs of HIV
+ve and felt – blown AIDS victims at the end of 1994.
Transmission with each Causes of HIV transmission
2. It mainly spreads through a sexual
route & blood to blood contact. It may be said that HIV spreads mainly
through four sources :
(a) Sex
with an infected partner – heterosexual as well as homosexual.
(b) Transfusion
of blood & blood products infected with HIV.
(c) Infected mother to the
unborn child, there being 30-50% chance of delivery.
HOW TO PREVENT AIDS / HIV INFECTION?
3. Presently, there is no vaccine to
prevent or drug to cure HIV infection. The only way is to prevent the disease.
Adapting to “safer sex” by using condoms & by avoiding multiple sexual
partners, can reduce sexual transmission of the disease. This could be done
through TV, radio, newspapers & other man media.
4. The most important fact is that India
has developed its first indigenously developed HIV / AIDS detection kit named
HIV-I & II W- Blot. Developed by the department of Biotechnology (DBT), the
kit was released in March 2001 for commercial production. According to DBT
officials, the kit is unique, since it has been “developed through” the HIV
strain prevalent in India .
5. The rate spread of HIV virus is not
uniform in all states. The highest no of AIDS cases are found in Mumbai, which
is known as AIDS capital of India .
6. To prevent the rapid spread, government
has taken appropriate step. But for successful implementation of these schemes,
awareness among general public is important.
